· Brands know that to stay competitive they must innovate in every way,
That is why they are now using the rental or sharing mode as a new line of business.

Lima, October 2019.- Conquering the new generations has been a challenge for brands, without a doubt, they want to acquire products and services that break the mold and respond to needs that favor the environment and social causes. In that sense, a new phenomenon appeared, recent and promising, emerging from the fashion sector: fashion sharing, which is nothing more than the rental of clothing.

It is worth noting that this trend had already been consolidated for years in some segments such as bridal fashion. From a different perspective, which unifies sustainability, experiential marketing, the desire for luxury products and, above all, the rise of new consumers, located in the millennial generation, who are no longer interested in "owning" if not in “Enjoy” clothes, just like they do when they share a car or go on vacation using Airbnb.

In this regard, Mireia González, Director of the Master in Management and Creation of Fashion Brands at ESdesing, reported: “The most avant-garde ecological brands are already using Fashion Sharing or rental as a business line, since it produces less (bringing fewer impacts to the environment), the usability of each product is increased and a new group of consumers is reached; which do not want to pay very high prices, but they are bold and want to try better, healthy and special products. ”

Mireia González indicated that the luxury market is another interested in the strategy, because it can access a new audience; Young and fresh, interested in their products, more like a fan than a traditional customer, but who will disseminate them, especially through social networks, consolidating the prestige and positioning of a leading brand in trends.

Where did the trend come from?

Rent The Runway is a pioneer brand, appeared in the United States in 2009 with a platform for rental of special occasion suits, where customers could rent garments of about 39 brands. In 2016 there was a boom of new options that basically work as a Netflix package, for a certain monthly money - around 90 dollars - and you get access to four items per month. In addition, they are associated with coworking networks to have physical places to deliver the garments.

Currently, this business model is evolving and offers services to brands, that is, they will not have to develop their own "renting" but will do so through the platform. Companies like Levi´s, J.Crew or Marquesa already belong to some catalogs.

The French adaptation Panoply

The fashion industry in France is the most important, it is ahead of sectors such as the automobile and tourism, not only in the luxury sector, but also in middle brands, so entering the fashion rental market is a more than interesting option to achieve profit and, incidentally, hang on the label of sustainability.

Panoply is the adaptation of Rent The Runway, but with the French market and its national brands as the main attraction. They include individual rental of garments or packages for 70 euros per month, leveraging on editorial content about fashion and trends, in order to keep updated and, at the same time, suggest clothing for each style or theme that is needed.

“Under a striking concept:‘ A closet full of unused clothes is part of the past ’, this company was formed by a group of friends from the
World of cooperation and NGOs. It could be considered that they had a nomadic life and were tired of throwing clothes that they did not wear after their professional stays in different parts of the world. There they saw the opportunity, but they wanted to put an interesting side, giving their customers the option of obtaining rented garments of many Spanish brands, most of them with sustainable values, generating a differential for what consumers want today, ”added Mireia González.

To conclude, it is interesting to analyze the packages that combine garments and accessories, which are sent to the client after selecting a stylist, who chooses them based on an exhaustive profile on the tastes and needs that were known through a questionnaire. The organization set its DNA on sustainability and the possibility of trying new local brands, fleeing the consumption and subsequent waste of garments from fast-fashion. A whole process that renews traditional fashion.

  7. ¡Hola!
